Gum disease is an oral infection caused by the harmful bacteria contained in plaque. When plaque builds up on the teeth, the bacteria inflame the gum tissues, causing them to become irritated, swollen and red and to bleed easily. This initial infection is the mildest stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. If diagnosed during this early stage of development, gum disease can be easily treated and in some cases eliminated entirely.
However, if gum disease is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it develops into a more severe and damaging condition known as periodontitis. In addition to swollen and bleeding gums, periodontitis can cause bone loss, gum recession and tooth loss. Periodontitis usually requires more frequent and extensive treatment in order to control.
